The TRF7963A device is an integrated analog front end (AFE) and data framing device for 13.56MHz RFID reader/writer systems supporting ISO/IEC 14443 A and B and Sony FeliCa. The device has built-in programming options, making it suitable for a wide range of proximity identification system applications.
The reader is configured by selecting the desired protocol in the control registers. Direct access to all control registers allows fine-tuning of different reader parameters as required.
The TRF7963A device supports data rates up to 848kbps for all framing and synchronization tasks compliant with the onboard ISO protocol. The device also supports NFC Forum tag types 1, 2, 3 and 4 in reader/writer mode. To support NFC Forum tag types 2, 3 and 4, the device allows the built-in protocol decoder in direct mode 2. NFC Forum tag type 1 requires direct mode 0. Other standard and custom protocols can also be implemented using direct mode 0. Direct Mode 0 gives the user full control over the AFE and also provides access to raw subcarrier data or unframed data already in ISO format and the associated (extracted) clock signal.
The receiver system features a dual-input receiver architecture for maximum communication stability. These receivers also include a variety of automatic and manual gain control options. The received signal strength from transponder, surrounding signal source or internal level can be obtained in RSSI register.
Communication between the MCU and the TRF7963A reader can be done using SPI or a parallel interface. When using the built-in hardware encoder and decoder, the transmit and receive functions use a 12-byte FIFO register. For direct transmit or receive functions, since the encoder or decoder can be bypassed, the MCU can process data in real time.
The TRF7963A device supports a wide supply voltage range of 2.7V to 5.5V and data communication levels of 1.8V to 5.5V for the MCU I/O interface.
When using a 5V supply, the transmitter has selectable output power levels of 100mW (+20dBm) or 200mW (+23dBm) equivalent into a 50Ω load and supports OOK and ASK modulation with selectable modulation depths.
A built-in programmable auxiliary voltage regulator provides up to 20mA for the MCU and other external circuits within the reader system.
Use the TRF7960AEVM or TRF7960ATB, which are superset devices of the TRF7963A transceiver IC, to begin evaluating the device.
